2JZ Swap E36: The Parts List No One Tells You About (Until It's Too Late)

The 2JZ-GTE is the gold standard of inline-six power. The BMW E36 is one of the best-handling chassis ever produced. Combining them is a match made in automotive heaven, but the "simple" swap you see on YouTube is often a lie.

Most builders budget for the engine, the standalone ECU, and the E36 chassis mounts. Then they hit the "hidden" wall. Steering rack interference, brake booster clearance, and cooling nightmares can stall a build for months.

At Swap-Spec, we provide verified fitment data. We don't guess. We sell genuine parts from brands that actually fit. Here is the parts list no one tells you about until your car is already on jack stands.

THE OIL PAN DILEMMA: FRONT VS. REAR SUMP

The first mistake happens before the engine even enters the shop. If you bought a 2JZ from a Toyota Aristo (Front Sump), it will not clear the E36 subframe.

THE REALITY

  • REAR SUMP REQUIRED: You need a rear sump oil pan setup (found on MKIV Supras).
  • SUBFRAME CLEARANCE: Even with a rear sump, clearance is tight.
  • PICKUP TUBE: You must swap the internal oil pickup tube to match the rear sump pan.

If you try to "make it work" with a front sump, you’ll end up cutting your subframe, compromising structural integrity. Do it right the first time. Check our Lexus Factory JZ collection for genuine Toyota gasket sets and hardware to seal that pan up.

STEERING RACK SPACING: THE 5MM HEADACHE

You’ve got the engine on the mounts. You go to bolt it down, and the oil pan is resting directly on the steering rack. This is a common issue with the JZ-E36 conversion.

THE FIX

  • STEERING RACK SPACERS: Specialized aluminum spacers are often needed to drop the rack slightly.
  • U-JOINT BINDING: Dropping the rack changes the angle of the steering shaft. You may need to clear the steering u-joint from hitting the exhaust manifold or downpipe.
  • LOW-PROFILE HARDWARE: Sometimes, the difference between a rattling car and a smooth one is 2mm of bolt-head clearance.

ENGINEERED PARTS WITHOUT THE GUESSING. We offer E36-specific solutions that account for these exact tolerances.

BRAKE BOOSTER INTERFERENCE: THE TIGHT SQUEEZE

The 2JZ is a long, wide engine. The stock BMW E36 brake booster is a massive vacuum drum that sits exactly where the 2JZ intake manifold wants to be.

THE HIDDEN COST

  • BOOSTER DELETE OR SWAP: You cannot run the stock booster with most JZ intake manifolds.
  • CHASE BAYS SOLUTIONS: Most pros switch to a manual brake bias valve or a much smaller diameter booster (like those from a 325ix or an aftermarket slim version).
  • BRAKE LINE RELOCATION: Once the booster moves, your hard lines won't line up. You need a relocation kit.

Failure to plan for the booster means you’ll be staring at a motor that won't sit level because it’s jammed against your master cylinder.

COOLING SOLUTIONS: BEYOND THE RADIATOR

The E36 engine bay was designed for a smaller footprint. Cramming a 3.0L iron-block turbo engine in there creates an oven.

CRITICAL COOLING COMPONENTS

  • REVERSE WATER NECK: The stock JZ water neck points directly into the E36 frame rail. You need a swivel or 180-degree neck to route your radiator hoses properly.
  • ELECTRIC FAN SHROUD: There is no room for a mechanical fan. You need high-CFM electric fans and a slim shroud.
  • INTERCOOLER PIPING PATHS: The E36 front core support is narrow. You’ll be cutting metal to route 3-inch charge pipes unless you use a specific E36-JZ intercooler kit.

Check out our Fuel and Turbo collection for high-performance cooling accessories that handle the heat of a boosted JZ.

DRIVETRAIN: THE BMW TRANS ADVANTAGE

Don't spend $6,000 on a Getrag V160. The modern way to swap a 2JZ is using BMW or Nissan transmissions.

THE 8HP REVOLUTION

The ZF 8HP 8-speed automatic is faster than any manual and handles massive torque. We specialize in 8HP swap systems.

  • ADAPTER PLATES: Precision-machined plates to mate the JZ to the 8HP.
  • 8HP CONTROLLERS: You need a standalone brain to tell that transmission when to shift. See our 8HP controllers.
  • CUSTOM DRIVESHAFT: Your stock E36 driveshaft will not bolt up. You need a custom 1-piece unit.

If you prefer a manual, the Drivetrain collection has the flywheels and clutch kits required to make the power stick.

ELECTRONICS AND WIRING: THE CAN-BUS GAP

The E36 uses a relatively simple electrical system, but getting the BMW gauges to talk to the Toyota engine requires a bridge.

THE SHOPPING LIST

  • PRO-SERIES HARNESS: Don't hack your factory harness. Buy a dedicated JZ-to-E36 harness. It saves 40 hours of troubleshooting.
  • CAN-BUS ADAPTERS: If you want your factory BMW tachometer and temp gauge to work, you need a signal converter.
  • FUEL PUMP UPGRADE: The stock E36 pump won't feed a 2JZ. You need a 450LPH Walbro or similar. Check the Electronics section for ECU and wiring support.

GENUINE PARTS ONLY. NO KNOCK-OFFS. Using a "cheap" wiring harness is the fastest way to burn your car to the ground. We only stock verified brands.

THE "WHILE YOU'RE IN THERE" LIST

Building a 2JZ E36 isn't just about the engine. If you double the horsepower, the 30-year-old BMW bushings will fail instantly.

  • REAR SUBFRAME REINFORCEMENT: E36s are famous for tearing subframe mounts. If you’re dropping a JZ in, you MUST weld in reinforcement plates.
  • DIFF BRACE: The torque of a 2JZ will snap a stock differential bolt.
  • UPGRADED SUSPENSION: The JZ is heavier than the BMW M50/S50. You need higher spring rates in the front to maintain handling balance. View our Suspension collection.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The 2JZ E36 swap is a rewarding project that creates a world-class performance car. But the "hidden" parts are what define a project's success. Don't let a $50 water neck or a steering rack clearance issue stop your build.

Plan your fuel system, choose your transmission, and make sure your cooling is up to the task.
